Selena Gomez: ‘I was inspired a lot by living in Paris’

Written by on February 26, 2024

Selena Gomez joins Zane Lowe on New Music Daily on Apple Music 1 to talk about her new single “Love On” out now. The two dive into the making of the song specifically working with Julia Michaels and Michael Pollack to craft it. Selena opens up to Zane about feeling safe and developing trust when she works with new people and balancing her busy career of acting and finding time to still do music. They also touch on Selena’s new relationship and finding someone that respects you.

Selena Gomez on the making of new single, “Love On”…

I’ve had a lot of fun lately, or I should say in the past few years, just experimenting and finding what those little ear charms are and that’s what they feel like to me. And I just have loved the song and I am so eager and excited, and I want people to feel good when they listen to it. That’s what I want to hear on the radio now.

On expressing happiness through her music and reflecting on spending time in Paris…

I think that’s the idea. The idea is that I was inspired a lot by living in Paris, that for two months I had to work there and I loved just the quality of life and how romantic it felt. And then to kind of feel really happy in my life and actually mean it is so, it’s just like you can tell in my video, I’m just smiling the whole time. It’s such a good feeling.

It’s really, really great. No, I was absolutely able to live life freely and I felt, even though I was single then I felt like it was one of the most romantic cities and just everything from walking down the street to a little cafe, it can be really sweet.

On working with Julia Michaels and Michael Pollack…

I mean with Julia, I think it’s to say that she is my partner in crime and she’s helped really shape my voice and she’s just taught me to lean into being a storyteller, but also really just staying in my lane and also having fun with music. But then I got to work on it with Monsters and Strangers, which is Stefan and Jordan and they’re amazing producers that have known me my whole life, basically. And it’s great to have worked with all these amazing people, but then throughout the years you just grow and you grow together and you make really awesome music

On feeling safe and developing trust when working with new people…

I don’t feel very safe in a lot of rooms just because of sharing my story, but I find that when I work with new people, it’s actually really fun to connect on what they’re walking through in life. And it’s like, oh, working with some great songwriters who know friends of friends and things like that. But I think it’s also important that I stay with my core group because they’re the people that can crack the code with me the best. They’re the ones that can really help me explain what I want to say.

On how she balances all of her endeavors, music, acting, etc…

I think there is a lot of ruckus about the idea of balancing both. But for me, I think I am in a really comfortable place where I get to do both. I’m very lucky, however, I take joy in taking my time and making music and selecting songs in a specific way, a specific time, and I’m comfortable with what I’m doing. So I think that’s all that matters.

On her relationship and finding someone that respects you…

Without getting into too much detail, I think it’s just really important to meet someone that respects you. And I think it’s really nice to also lean on someone who understands the world that I live in. But I’d have to say overall it’s the safest that I feel and it’s been really lovely and I’ve only grown through it, so it’s awesome.
