Janet Jackson recalls the moment her music career began

Written by on July 24, 2024

Janet Jackson has recalled the moment her music career began.

In a new interview with the BBC, Janet explained that when she was nine years old in 1975, she had nothing to do while her already famous brothers rested after a 10-month world tour.

The 58-year-old said that to fill her time, she snuck into the recording studio at her family’s home in California and started playing and recording a song she called Fantasy.

“I laid down the drum track, I did the background vocals, I sang and I played everything on it,” Janet told the outlet.

She then revealed that her brother, the late pop star Michael Jackson, had found the tape.

“I was so embarrassed. The studio door was open and Mike was listening to it,” she remembered. “I think Randy (Jackson) was listening to it, my father was listening.”

She added, “Then my father (Joe Jackson) said, ‘You’re gonna sing.'”

Janet revealed she didn’t want to be a singer at the time, but was inspired to go to university instead.

“I said, ‘No, no, no, I want to go to the college and study business law,” she said, adding, “It was kind of hard (to argue) because, look at where (Joe) led my brothers.”

Since her music career began nearly five decades ago, the Together Again hitmaker has sold more than 100 million records and became the first woman to be nominated for best producer at the Grammys.

Elsewhere in the interview, Janet reflected on her TV debut, which saw her appear on The Carol Burnett Show alongside Randy.

“I don’t ever remember being asked,” she said of appearing on the show. “I just remember doing it.”
