Hurricane Lee to Drop Rain on Bermuda on Path to US-Canada Border
Written by worldOneFm on September 14, 2023
Bermuda prepared Thursday for rain from the outer bands of Hurricane Lee as the storm passes to the west of the island.
Authorities closed schools and suspended ferry services while issuing high surf warnings.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm could bring between 2 and 5 centimeters of rain to Bermuda by early Friday.
Forecasters expect the storm to approach the New England region of the United States and the Maritimes Provinces of eastern Canada in the coming days.
The Canadian Hurricane Center said the storm will gradually weaken but will expand in size, making landfall just below hurricane strength either late Saturday or early Sunday.
Watches and warnings are place for coastal areas of New England stretching from Rhode Island to Maine in the United States, as well as Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in Canada.
In addition to rainfall amounts that could reach 10 centimeters, the U.S. National Hurricane Center warned of the threat of storm surge and life-threatening surf conditions.
Ahead of the storm, parts of New England dealt with severe thunderstorms that brought flooding rains this week. The National Weather Service said the storms also spawned a likely tornado in Rhode Island and Connecticut.
