Having plied her trade in the low-budget indie realm with the likes of Lady Macbeth and cult horror Midsommar, the actress was eventually snagged by Marvel Studios to portray the assassin, Yelena Belova.
After an appearance in the Hawkeye series, she’ll soon be back in Marvel’s Thunderbolts opposite David Harbour, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Harrison Ford.
But during her recent chat with TIME, Pugh revealed that her move into the mainstream wasn’t welcomed by all.
“So many people in the indie film world were really p****d off at me. They were like, ‘Great, now she’s gone forever,'” she said.
“And I’m like, no, I’m working as hard as I used to work. I’ve always done back-to-back movies. It’s just people are watching them now.
“You just have to be a bit more organized with your schedule.”
Back in March, the Oscar-nominated star discussed the bizarre fact that so many of her fans believe she’s American.
“Sometimes when I do things publicly, like if I present an award or I’m on a stage talking, they’re like, ‘That is the fakest English accent I have ever heard,'” Pugh told James Acaster and Ed Gamble on their Off Menu podcast.
“What do you think I… how… what? How do I sound better? Sometimes when I’ve done Instagram Stories, [they’re] like, ‘Oh my God, Florence Pugh sounds like she’s doing an accent,’ and I’m like no, that is me. That’s literally me. So sorry.”
