David Gray back in studio for ‘massive’ orchestral ‘session’ for upcoming album

Written by on December 31, 2023

David Gray has been back in the studio recording a “massive” orchestral “session” for his upcoming album.

The ‘Babylon’ singer, 55, whose last studio record was 2021’s ‘Skellig’, made the announcement to his fans in an Instagram video that showed him standing in a North London recording studio and listening to a strings section from a sound booth.

Referring to a North West London postcode, he said in the clip: “Hello, well, very briefly, I’m here at Air Studios, NW23, 250 yards from my old house, to record the brass, the woodwind and the strings on six songs of the new album.

“So this is a big deal, it’s a massive session.”

The singer/songwriter also captioned the footage: “1. Orchestral manoeuvres.

“Greetings from Air Studios NW3 and a sneak peek behind the scenes at the recent recording session for brass, woodwind and strings.

“It sounded so so good. So much music to come over the next couple of years…..watch this digital space…. .”

David didn’t give any more details about the upcoming LP, and its title is still unknown.

In January 2021, the singer announced his 12th studio album was to be released on 19 February that year.

Titled ‘Skellig’ after the Skellig Islands in County Kerry, Ireland, it featured a title track and a single called ‘Heart and Soul’ and was recorded at musician Edwyn Collins’ Helmsdale studio in Sutherland.

David released his first album in 1993 and shot to global fame five years later when he put out his smash ‘White Ladder’ record.

It became the fifth best-selling album of the 2000s in Britain and ranked as the tenth best-selling album of the 21st century in the UK in 2019.
