Sabrina Carpenter was told to ‘pick a genre’ early in her career

Written by on August 31, 2024

Sabrina Carpenter has recalled being told to “pick a genre” early in her career.

In mid-August, the 25-year-old pop star released her long-awaited sixth studio album Short N’ Sweet, which features a mix of genres from pop to R&B, disco and country.

In an interview with Paper magazine, Sabrina recalled being told early on in her career that she needed to “pick a genre” and stick with it.

“I’ll put it this way: when I was younger, I was told by a lot of grown men that I needed to pick a genre, stay in that genre, be that genre and do one thing,” the singer remembered. “And there wasn’t even a genre that excited me at the time. It was their idea of what I should be. I was like 12 or 13.”

She added, “I know that sounds insane, but that was put into my head.”

The Please Please Please hitmaker then noted that rather than stick to one genre, she wanted to create music that represented her.

“So I think secretly my entire life, the goal was to be able to create something that felt multi-genre but also so distinctly myself,” she told the publication. “Sonically, all the songs are different, but the lyrical perspective is all Sabrina. It’s all me and it’s all stories in my life. That’s the throughline.”

Sabrina added that she hopes this tactic means her fans will all get something they enjoy.

“If your favourite song is Espresso, then you’ll have another song that you love. And if your favourite song is Please Please Please, you’ll have another song that you love,” she said, before joking, “And if you hate both of those songs, then listen to a different album.”
