Demi Lovato reveals ‘guilt’ over problematic behaviour as a child star

Written by on August 17, 2024

Demi Lovato has admitted she feels “guilt” over problematic behaviour she exhibited as a child star.

The singer explained she was traumatised by the experience of working from a young age and it led her to act out in ways she feels unhappy about now.

Demi, 31, starred on Disney’s Camp Rock from the age of 15, and quickly became a household name in the children’s television space.

“I didn’t realise that child stardom could be traumatic – and it isn’t traumatic for everyone, but for me, it was,” Demi told The Hollywood Reporter.

In her new documentary, Child Stars, Demi interviewed some of her fellow alumni including former Camp Rock co-star Alyson Stoner, who was candid about the experience.

“I remember a sense of walking on eggshells,” Alyson, 31, said in the documentary, explaining Demi was known for an explosive temper.

In 2010, Demi punched a backup dancer in the face – an incident that led to her checking into a treatment facility for substance abuse.

“I think about people in the wardrobe department on my TV show because I’d go in there in bad moods all the time, and I worry about guest stars that came on or the other actors or the people during Camp Rock 2,” Demi said.

“And it’s easy to excuse that behaviour because I was so young and in so much pain, but I’m really remorseful, and that’s a guilt that stays with you forever.”
