Elton John ‘deeply moved’ by Madonna’s tribute to AIDS victims during Celebration Tour

Written by on October 27, 2023

Elton John was “deeply moved” by Madonna’s tribute to AIDS victims during her Celebration Tour.

During the world tour, the Queen of Pop places a sheet over a lifeless dancer before launching into her 1986 song Live to Tell. As she sings from a floating box, images of those who died of HIV/AIDS, including artist Keith Haring, photographer Herb Ritts and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, appear on the screen behind her.

Sharing a picture from the performance on Instagram, Elton and representatives from the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) commended Madonna for her tribute.

“We’re deeply moved by the heartfelt tribute from @madonna during her Celebration Tour performance of Live to Tell, honouring the 40.4 million people we’ve lost to AIDS,” the joint statement reads.

“Thank you, Madonna, for your advocacy and compassion, and for raising important awareness of the ongoing mission to end AIDS. With 39 million people living with HIV today, 9.4 million of whom are not currently on life-saving treatment, we must keep using our voices and platforms to ensure everyone has the opportunity to live full and healthy lives.”

The Rocket Man singer founded EJAF in the ’90s and the non-profit organisation is chaired by his husband David Furnish. The foundation supports HIV prevention and education programmes and offers care and support to people living with or at risk of HIV.

Madonna kicked off the Celebration Tour earlier this month. She is next scheduled to perform in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday.
